About CPV St. Charles

Project Overview

The St. Charles Energy Center (SCEC) is a 745 megawatt natural gas-fueled combined-cycle power generation facility located in Waldorf, Maryland. The SCEC generates enough electricity to power more than 700,000 homes, helping Maryland to safely meet its demand for energy with reliable, cost-effective and environmentally-responsible low emissions generation. Using clean natural gas and a highly efficient design, the SCEC is one of the cleanest conventional facilities ever built in Maryland and the Washington, DC area. The facility is helping to reduce the dependency on older coal-burning power plants which currently supply a majority of the region’s power.

As part of CPV’s mission to conserve natural resources, the SCEC’s innovative design utilizes ”grey water” from the Mattawoman Water Treatment Facility to meet facility cooling needs. By using recycled wastewater that would otherwise be discharged into the Potomac River, the SCEC is minimizing its impact on valuable water resources and the environment while putting a waste product to productive use and creating an additional revenue stream for the region.
