Statement from Tom Rumsey, Senior Vice President External Affairs Competitive Power Ventures

For Immediate Release: January 25, 2018

Braintree, MA — “The CPV Valley Energy Center is currently in the commissioning phase. The facility is starting for the first time and "tuned" to safely operate at optimal efficiency and reliability. We anticipate this process to continue over the next couple of weeks. As we go through the startup process and test on fuel oil, a more visible plume is observable. Any visual impacts or odor associated with startup is temporary. Once natural gas is available, we will switch to our primary fuel, greatly reducing emissions and improving facility efficiency. When the plant is operating on clean natural gas, it will displace older, less efficient generation sources that emit at a significantly higher rate, reducing New York’s carbon emissions by an estimated ½ million tons annually.

“The emissions and impacts associated with startup and testing are part of the permitting process, and as always we will continue to adhere to those standards. It’s important to note most of the visible plume is steam, not emissions from combustion.  We want to assure residents that all of the current activity is being conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with the approved State permitting process.”
